At Tattersalls (Newmarket) December Sale of breeding stock in the form of foals, in-foal and empty broodmares and fillies for breeding as well as some stallion prospects the turnover exceeds £100 million or an average of over £10 million per sale day. Goffs in Ireland has a similarly structured if somewhat smaller sale and in Lexington Kentucky the enormous Keeneland November Sale generates far greater revenue still. At more or less the same time but without clashing, breeding stock sales of importance take place in France, elsewhere in England, elsewhere in the U.S. and in some other European countries. Japan has an internationally notable sale of foals in Hokkaido in July and Australia, New Zealand and South Africa offer trade in stock on the Southern Hemisphere cycle.
The year round activities of the breeding industry follow an intertwined cycle of detailed studies leading to selections of matings, of commercial negotiation of stallion contracts, of marshalling mares into the best farms for visiting selected stallions, of accurate veterinary monitoring of the broodmare leading to optimum conception conditions when visiting a stallion and of caring for the mares until all going well the foal arrives under close human supervision. Some six months after arriving in the world, the foal will leave the mare and run with foals prior to sale preparation or to remain on the farm until sold as yearlings or directly placed into training. In the meantime, the mare should again be carrying a half brother or sister thus sustaining the breeding cycle. Allan Bloodlines provides breeding management for commercial breeders, overseas breeders seeking to upgrade their stock over time and hobby breeders who are developing a filly they have raced or are breeding simply because they love the association with equine mothers and children.
