Horses for 2008

CWM RHONDDA (USA)

3 year old bay filly
by GULCH ex FRAYNE by RED RANSOM

with PETER CHAPPLE-HYAM in Newmarket

Beautifully bred in Kentucky, she is by a top class stallion out of a full sister, by an emerging broodmare sire, to a multiple stakes winner on both sides of the Atlantic.

“She looks outstanding,” said Peter in March ‘08, “I am looking to step up her work soon but she is going nicely already”.

Having won The Derby for the second time and at Royal Ascot amongst many other victories in 2007, Peter has some smartly bred horses in his successful yard including for Coolmore and Cheveley Park Stud campaigning at top level. CWM RHONDDA is one of five for Allan Bloodlines and clients.

“CWM RHONDDA” is both Welsh for Rhondda Valley, a kind of Gulch (!), and sufficiently unusual to be available for a USA bred where there are hundreds of thousands of thoroughbreds. Cwm Rhondda is also the name of the tune to “Bread of Heaven”.

SEMPRE LIBERA (IRE)

3 year old bay filly
by STATUE OF LIBERTY ex LUCKY OAKWOOD  by  ELMAAMUL

with RICHARD PHILLIPS near Moreton In Marsh, Gloucestershire

Placed four times in four late season runs at 2, this filly has grown again and should make up into a nice 3 year old. She has a tough streak in her which may come in handy and will benefit from the quiet Cotswolds surroundings where Richard has recently sent out a winning hurdler for The Managers.

Richard has a successful team of young National Hunt horses for the winter and concentrates on the flat in the summer. “SEMPRE LIBERA looks nicely handicapped,” says Richard. “We look forward to campaigning her”.

“SEMPRE LIBERA” means “Always Free”, inspired by her sire Statue of Liberty, and the name of a famous aria from La Traviata.

YEOMAN OF ENGLAND (IRE)

2 year old bay  colt
by PYRUS ex REGAL LUSTRE by AVERTI

with BRYAN SMART on Sutton Bank, near Thirsk, N.Yorks

“Just quote me as saying ‘Wow !’ “ said Bryan Smart when this colt arrived. “You always buy me a good two year old to train”.

In each of the past three season, Allan Bloodlines has sent youngsters to Bryan that have won at 2. TITUS ALONE (triple winner including Royal Ascot at 2), FATHOM FIVE (quadruple winner and Listed placed including winning at 2), C’MON YOU IRONS (winner at 2 in 2007).

Bryan loves training his “babies” and has achieved a remarkable feat by winning with a 2 year old at Royal Ascot three years running.

The roots of the choice of the name “YEOMAN OF ENGLAND” lie in the history of his grand-dam, NOBLE LUSTRE, a Shakespearean reference to the eyes of the Good Yeomen of England.
