SIBAYA YEARLING SALE HOLDS UP QUITE WELL

Allan sells two out of three

4th Jul 2009

The Sibaya Yearling Sale at Umhlanga Rocks on the edge of Durban is a lower cost sale in which some gems can be found. But on this occasion (2nd/3rd July), David Allan of Allan Bloodlines was there as a vendor through the consignment of David Hepburn-Brown's Hemel 'n Aarde Stud.

The Sale average was R 57,057, down from 65,644, well below the levels of the National Yearling Sales. A large first foal (colt) by REQUIEM, a Danehill sire stone cold at the sale but building up the winners sold very moderately (but sold!). Fortunately he will be trained by Alistair Gordon, who trained the Cape Cross dam for Allan, at Summerveld, half an hour from Durban. Then a rather small but strong colt by the highly successful MR PROSPECTOR horse MUHTAFAL out of a black type mare sold quite well for R 80,000 to be trained for owner Hassan Adams by Glen Ennion in the Cape.

Allan retained a racy colt (also first foal) by top sire CAPTAIN AL out of his winning mare SELIKA (by NATIONAL EMBLEM out of an Australian SCENIC mare). Although by one of the hottest sires in the country who has broken his own records this season already, CAPTAIN AL's few progeny here generally failed to make their reserves and Allan - whilst keen to sell the other two - always earmarked this nice colt for possible retention.

Allan did try for one or two of the nicer fillies in the sale for a client, but was valuing in the Rand-based market and recommended not to exceed.
