Tough to buy from top to bottom but nice to sell
In a gruelling week at Tattersalls, Newmarket, the Saturday and Sunday could be spent exclusively working on catalogues and on viewings ranged across Tattersalls undulating 44 acres but the subsequent Monday – Thursday saw viewings from first light and fitted in between continuous selling in the ring from 0930 for 9 – 11 hours depending on the day. As usual, many a mile was covered on foot.
Having learned to try to strike on Monday, Allan Bloodlines went into action on behalf of four clients and secured four colts and fillies on the first day at prices in six figures and modest prices as well. Tuesday and Wednesday saw the team being under bidder or “blown away” on colts in the 40-120,000 guineas range to the extent that those particular clients activated discretion and will look another time. It was perfectly possible to buy the wrong horse, but difficult to buy the one you wanted. The same applied to an Irish client, interested in just a few particular horses for flat then hurdling but there will be many other opportunities. Other fillies were secured on Wednesday evening and uncomfortably late on the Thursday having come close on a number of occasions.
David Allan, with Yoshiko Allan in support in the p.r. department, was ably assisted at this sale by Victoria Mallalieu and her fiancé Chris Silverwood. Their engagement ended straight after the sale. They got married!
The purchases will all race on in England, Kazakhstan and South Africa with the gaps perhaps being filled at the December Sale.
BASKERVILLE, a triple winner for Allan Bloodlines, sold strongly relative to the somewhat quieter Thursday afternoon.
